Ralph Hotere: Dream of Snow Falling / 1 - 18 August 2007
John Leech Gallery is pleased to present Dream of Snow Falling - a selection of works by Ralph Hotere. Present throughout is the theme of ‘collaboration’ subtly expressed by the show’s title adapted from Hotere’s sumptuous 1984 canvas, In a Dream of Snow Falling, itself borrowed from a poem by Bill Manhire. Composed of a variety of media, the works assembled provide a brief overview of Hotere’s extensive oeuvre, demonstrating the artist’s extraordinary diversity and expertise not only in mastering materials but in his ability to incorporate major themes including religion, politics, poetry and environmental issues. A supplementary catalogue with essay by Gallery Director John Gow has been published to mark the occasion and to recognise Ralph Hotere’s remarkable contribution to contemporary New Zealand art as a unique practitioner and inspirational visionary.
